The 1992 Universal Exposition of Seville, popularly known as Expo '92 or Expo, lasted six months, beginning on April 20 and ending on October 12,2 coinciding with the V Centenary of the Discovery of America. It was held to commemorate this event and its theme was “The Age of Discovery”.

At the end of the Universal Exposition, the infrastructures had multiple endings. Some were dismantled or demolished because they were ephemeral constructions, or because of the danger caused by their subsequent abandonment, others were moved and many others have been used to convert them into the Cartuja Science and Technology Park and the Isla Mágica Theme Park, as well as for administrative, university and equipment uses for the city.

The celebration of the event transformed the city urbanistically, a new road network was built, new highways and ring roads, a new central railroad station was built and the airport was enlarged. Of particular note was the construction of the high-speed railway line between Madrid and Seville.

112 member countries, 23 international organizations, several international companies, as well as the 17 autonomous communities of Spain participated in this Exposition. A total of 95 pavilions were built, 63 for countries, 6 for sponsoring companies, 5 thematic pavilions, 5 for international organizations and 17 for autonomous communities.
